SEMINAR: PERSPECTIVES ON CLIMATE CHANGE, NATURAL RESOURCES AND SOCIAL
JUSTICE – CONNECTING THE LOCAL TO THE GLOBAL
Date: Friday 23 May 2014
Venue: Economicum, Arkadiankatu 7, Helsinki
Kepa and the Department for Political and Economic Studies at the University of Helsinki have the honour to invite you to a half-day seminar discussing ways to secure ecologically, socially and economically sustainable development on an over-burdened planet characterized by increasing rivalry over the control of natural
resources.
Is it possible to pursue the dominant model of economic development while respecting planetary boundaries and democratic practices of governance? What alternatives are indigenous movements and community-based organizations around the world proposing? How could international rules and agreements foster a transformation towards ecologically viable and socio-economically equal patterns of production? What's the role of climate change in all of this?
Our interesting and diverse set of speakers, including representatives from social movements, academia and government, will present their views and opinions on these and many other questions. The audience is encouraged to actively participate in the deliberations.
The languages of the event are English and Spanish. Interventions in English will be interpreted into Spanish and vice versa.
Everyone is welcome and no prior registration is required. Coffee will be served half an hour before the seminar begins.
